Hidden with Christ in God: A Theology of Colossians and Philemon by Kevin McFadden (Crossway, 2023).
Colossians and Philemon are small NT epistles, but they pack a strong theological punch. Together, they provide a framework for the Christian life centered on Christ himself and the theological implications that should follow from this kind of anchoring focus.
Kevin McFadden's entry in the NT Theology series is a good example of the strength of these kinds of volumes. Rather than providing a section by section commentary on Colossians and Philemon, McFadden thoughtfully articulates the theological moves that Paul makes as he exalts Christ, prepares his readers to combat false teaching, and applies theological principles to difficult inter-personal and social relationships. though they are brief, "in these letters we find some of the Bible's most profound teaching about Christ and the practical difference he makes in our lives and relationships."
McFadden characterizes the main points of both letters as "essentially practical: walk in Christ (Col 2:6) and welcome your brother (Philem 17). But these practical instructions are rooted in the deep theology of the letters, especially their Christology." Accordingly, two of the most helpful features of this book are the brief but careful explorations of Paul's Christological reflection in Col 1:15–23 and the issue of slavery in the ancient world, mentioned in Col 3:22–4:1 and throughout Philemon (see pp. 83–86; pp. 95–99).
Overall, this is a helpful and thoughtful resource for understanding these rich biblical texts.
